I don't know if it was a cultural thing at the time, or that my parents started out as zero income students, but my mom definately got creative with our food. Picture a hot dog sliced lengthwise, topped with a scoop of mashed potatoes and some shredded cheese, then baked and served with ketchup and a side of jello with some canned fruit mixed in. Did anyone else eat like this? Tonight I dumped a pack of Costco flautas into a casserole dish, poured over some canned enchilada sauce (Macayo's) and a few handfuls of cheese and cooked it till the cheese was all melty, and it was good! But it reminded me of those dinners, and of James Lileks Gallery of Regrettable Food. He has a collection of old cookbooks and food ads and his comments that are really funny. (I got that jello picture above from his site.) I had to save this ad from the Sunday paper a few months ago because I thought it was pretty funny.
Mmmm- give me some of that Slurpin' Dunkin' Wholesome fun!

But you've GOT to love cheese crisp dunked in tomato soup, right? Allison Ash taught me that in Jr. High and I've now passed it on to my kids. We have to have that when Justin's not home, though because he is horrified. I'll have to check out this listing of "regrettable foods". That sounds fun.
Isn't it funny how you don't realize that your mom cooks a certain "way" until you're old? Or were you a bit more observant than I was?
My mom makes me eat the most disgustingest stuff that's very regrettable but I don't know what it's called even though I do have a very big vocabulary for a 1-year old.
Love, Drew
that jello looks scary! :P
No Sarah, I eat absolutely nothing in tomato soup! My mom used to use it as enchilada sauce- the memory almost makes me gag! Cheese crisps need salsa...
